I believe I’ve told you before that I’m not a fan of ceiling fans. Get it? Fan of a fan? I also believe that when I told you that, I used the same joke. Never gets old, people.
It’s not that I think all ceiling fans are ugly or that they’re not needed in some situations. They’re just not. for. me. I had this fan installed when we built this house for our guestroom, and I’ve hated since the moment it was put in—8 years ago. Nice picture, eh?
Around my birthday, I spotted this beauty, and I knew it was just the item I needed to finally get rid of that eyesore. My birthday was October 9th. 9 months ago.
Fast forward to present day, and I was finally able to get my FIL up here long enough to install it for me. As my husband says, “I don’t do electrical.” Uh…ok.
I took a series of pictures in this process, and in none of them will you find my husband actually doing anything. He was eating pull-apart licorice. I take that back. He did turn off the fuse—more than once. That’s my MIL laying down in the background. She knew this was gonna take a minute.
After all was said and done, here. she. be. You may have noticed that I left the crystals off. Yup, I did. They were just a little too over-the-top for me, and I like how it looks a little more tailored without them.
You also might have noticed that I’ve done a couple of other things since that first picture. I’ve got lots to say about this room (the good, the bad, and the ugly), but that’ll have to come when it’s complete.
For now, you’ll just have to consider this your sneak peek.
Thought for the day: Thank goodness for father-in-laws.
The light is fantastic. I have to say when I first saw it with the crystals in the first picture, I thought it was incredible… but then when I saw the last picture without the crystals… I think you made the right choice leaving them off. It really makes a fantastic statement in the room. Nicely done!
Looks great! Love the chandelier.
Good job. We couldn’t do without our ceiling fans here in Cajun country. Even all winter, they hum along. (Yay for FIL’s who are good guys!)
Ok….I spy with my little eye a darling bird lamp in the corner! Love that! The chandy looks lovely. Three cheers for FIL’s! (not mine, he barely knows my kids names….) But yours? Awesome!
I agree. Ceiling fans are icky. I like the light you picked out though =)
Your new chandelier is gorgeous! I liked it with the crystals in the first pic, but your right it still looks lovely without them. I am looking forward to seeing what else you have done with the room 🙂
Ooo… Ahhh… it looks so nice! Definitely classes up the room right away!
I love the style. I can’t wait to see more of the room. I’m such a “finished space picture ho” LOL.
I think that the crystals are gorg, but you’re right, they would make the space look even MORE “fancy-like” I’m with you on the more simplistic look. Nice choice 🙂
Love that light. Looks so much better than the white ceiling fan. I would love to hang a similar light in our bedroom but living in Florida we need the fans, last summer our A/C went out and boy… I fell in love with those fans all over again lol. Can’t wait to see the rest of the room 🙂
Love your light. Can’t wait to see the entire room!
I too have a ceiling fan in the bedroom and have been wanting to replace it. Your new light look wonderful and makes me want to get rid of my fan even more!
While I share your distaste of ceiling fans, I could not live without mine in my bedroom. I love your new light! I saw one similar to that on overstock…it is very striking. Your comments about your husband were cracking me up…I know how to do electrical only because of doing theater in high school and being taught to wire lights. 🙂 I’ve installed dimmers, light fixtures and fans.
Love it!
I love the light, and your right, it looks much better without the crystals. They’re pretty but a little much for a bedroom! Have a great week!
beautiful light fixture!! i too, hate ceiling fans. but mainly because dusting them is a pita. :o) in my “new” house, only 2 bedrooms are wired for any kind of ceiling light/ceiling fan. kind of weird. my husband is certified in navy nuclear electricity and i don’t trust him to wire a ceiling fan. :oX
Awesome chandelier!! Where did you find that beauty??? I have a new home with “boob” lights so I am always searching for replacements that are affordable. I have a love – hate realtionship with ceiling fans. Why can’t they make pretty ones at a reasonable price?? I don’t like having stand alone fans in each of our rooms but it’s what we need to keep the air moving and help cool it off upstairs. I go back and forth with the idea of having ceiling fans put in so that I don’t have the eyesore of the floor fans. ugh I digress.
I don’t really like fans either. I love your new light fixture though!
The light is beautiful! It really doesn’t need the crystals. I saw a great tutorial the other day about turning chandelier crystals into necklace pendants. You could do that with them. Thanks for sharing!
Love it!
Must Have Cute Bird Lamp In Back Of Room!!! AAAAAHHHH!
I love the new light fixture, truly beautiful! But really, I must know where the cute cute lamp in the back came from!
Thank you so much for sharing!!
Great story about that lamp, Megan, but I for now…I got it at HomeGoods.
Love your choice of replacement for your ceiling fan. Did you try perhaps just leaving the crystals at the top of the fixture?? I personally miss the crystals, but I do understand it might look too feminine for your husband’s taste.
I hear ya, Linda. I do love the crystals. It was simply more than I wanted in the space. Believe me–I held onto them. 🙂
I LOVE that your husband was being so helpful with his pull apart licorice. Hilarious!
Amen to that.
I agree with Rachel!!!!
Melinda
Can I borrow your FIL – puh.lease??? I have so many projects to do and my husband, like yours, will be pulling apart licorice (lol!). Kudos to you. We have ceiling fans in every room (except the bathroom) and I too hate them!!!
That made me laugh, Tracy! That’s a lot of ceiling fans! 🙂
I love your new chandelier! We’re in the process of redecorating our master bedroom (along with several other rooms in the house). I’d love to do a chandelier like this, but we really need our ceiling fan here in the South. Also, we’d end up whacking our heads on the chandelier due to the placement of the wiring in the ceiling – not a fun idea! Enjoy your new light fixture!
I have never liked ceiling fans, specially over the bed. I’m always looking at it wondering if it will fall.
I have been thinking about ADDING a ceiling fan. I really like this idea much better. It looks wonderful!
There isn’t any comparison is there. The ceiling fan does pale in the light (pun intended) of the new chandelier/shade combo. I hope you gave it to someone to reuse.
Ceiling fans serve a purpose in hot areas of the country. Lights are pretty but they do not move the air and unless needed they are just a bother to clean. Pretty lights are nice but when you have to pay for AC when a fan would do you lose out. I hope you recycled the light.
Uhh…ok, Josie. I agree. Ceiling fans serve a purpose. I will say that I sure don’t feel like I’m losing out every time I look at the new beautiful light! Thanks for stopping by.
Ooh, I love your new light fixture!
But what caught my eye most is that we share the same birthday! Yay!
oh my goodness you crack me up! pulling apart licorice. that is too too funny. while dad is standing on the bed an your mother in law is taking it easy on the pillow. Gotta love this family portrait. but your new fixture looks wonderful in the room. So great job to all involved!
So pretty! Do you think you’ll ever add the crystals to change it up?
Lol! If it were my light, I would have them off and on in alternating weeks! It looks so good with, and so good without!
Love your new lighting fixture, but of course I prefer it with the crystals. I’m sure that shocks you! 😉 You can always add the crystals when your flashier & blingier guests come to stay with you. LOL
