Organizing Kids

February 6, 2009 by Chris

I’m sick. My throat feels like I’m swallowing razor blades wrapped in sandpaper. My body feels like it’s going through a meat processor. Get the picture?

However, I’m not one to miss a party. I might be late for a party, but miss one? No way. Wendy over at The Shabby Nest is having a Taming Kid Clutter party, and anyone with kids will be running like madwomen to see all the ideas! Now, I’m not one to claim I can write a book on how to tame clutter, but I do know this…everything must have a place!

Here are some of those “places” for my kids clutter.
Key word: BINS. Bins for everything. A bookshelf filled with bins immediately turns into a toybox for all those microscopic Polly Pocket shoes. I keep this bin organizer in our hall closet downstairs. The secret is to recycle so that the kids’ favorite toys of the moment are easily accessible when they’re playing.Art supplies? No problem! Stick ’em in some cute little dollar section buckets from Target and add some labels to them. It’s almost fun to organize when you can make it look cute!

Believe me…without these labels, my kids would have NO idea what’s in those little buckets. ๐Ÿ™‚

And lastly? Kids art storage. Pick out your favorite art pieces throughout the year, and store them in a flat box in their closet.
If you’re really motivated, you can decorate them to match the kids’ decor in their room. How fun!

Well, back to bed for me. I just thought I’d add my little contribution for all those parents out there struggling with the same things I am–clutter!

You have some really good ideas. I really like the idea of having the toys in the hall closet and rotating them out. I may have to rearrange my hall closet and try this out. I hope you feel much better soon. I am really into home remedies so try putting some peroxide in your ears (one at a time) and let it bubble. Supposedly it kills the germs, colds often reside in ears. It really works. Repeat the peroxide treatment every two-three hours. If you try it let me know. Get plenty of rest.

Another great option for kids artwork is take photos of them and then give them away to the grandparents. 1) you get to keep the pictures for prosperity sake 2) the pictures take up no room and 3)you shift the guilt to the grandparents in regards to actually throwing them away.

Do you have a slight case of OCD? Because I have never seen someone so organized, especially with the kids' stuff, which is a good sign by the way. ๐Ÿ™‚
I love the different colors of bins. They're so pretty!

    Chris,

I would love to "steal" your idea of labeling these fabric bins. I recently purchased some of the same ones for our new playroom shelves (post coming tomorrow) and I need to label them for my daughter. If you don't mind letting me copy you, can you please tell me where you purchase the round labels from? I am guessing I can find them at an office supply store but I know you like to save money so perhaps you know where I can get them on the cheap?!?!

    Thanks,
    Desiree
