Just Another Reason to Love Ikea

September 27, 2010 by Chris

Pottery Barn $180 (chair only) $80 (slipcover)= $260

So what if it looks like this when you get it home?

A few minutes later it looks like this. I couldn’t imagine spending all that money on just one chair! I got the look I wanted for the price I wanted.

ikea dining room

For $60, I’ve got some beautiful chairs that will wash up quickly and are very comfortable if I do say so myself. However, I can’t guarantee that the room around the chairs will stay as beautiful. Notice how they look this morning.

What used to be warm, inviting, and clean

is currently manly, disgusting, and messy.

While I used to walk in the door to see this…

I now walk in the door and see this.

I’ll explain that later. It’s a whole ‘nother Jerry Springer show.  Stay tuned.

Ha-Larious! We are in the process of moving so our whole house looks a lot like your dining room. Hubby is in law enforcement too, so there is gear everywhere. Why do they have so much crap? A friend came over to help me yesterday and said, "Maybe you can move the ammo off your mantle before the movers get here." Bless her heart! If only ammo on the mantle was my biggest problem. Apparently it is procrastination!

My husband is in the military, and I call that situation, "When the army vomits all over the house." His STUFF takes up the whole large closet under our stairs and then some. But the chairs are great! haha.

Those chairs look awesome. Sorry for the mess you have to look at now, I hope that is temporary, your dining room is just beautiful (the before pictures at least)

OMG, Chris, it looks like para-troopers landed in your dining room! Love the chairs! Never thought of Ikea and I've been thinking of getting two Parson's chairs to add to my dining room table, just to mix things up a little. I'm actually getting tired of seeing all the wood and legs. Thanks for that! I wonder how much shipping would be. Otherwise I have to bring out the calendar and plan a trip!

Lovin those chairs (and the dog butt). My guess is that hubby just got back from hunting and plopped everything in your living/dining room. If it didn't get messy every once in a while we wouldn't love our homes so much when we cleaned them

Oh my! uh-hum, looks like your hubby's job threw up in your dining room;)

L O V E those chairs. We got two a couple of weeks ago for my scrapbook room makeover, you know the one that's been years int he making!

I'm a fairly new reader of your blog. Maybe you've mentioned this before, but where oh where did you get the art for your dining room?

I have the worst time committing to wall decor. Either the price, the size, or the composition just doesn't win me over enough. Maybe you can be my saving grace?!

The chairs are great. Thanks for posting the picture of the messy dining room. Mine isn't really decorated yet (that's why I've been stalking blogs like yours to get ideas!) but usually it is covered with school books, craft stuff and toys.

I’m looking at Parson’s chairs and really like the Ikea ones that you have. So my question is: are they holding up ok? The ones in the showroom are really wobbly. Does anyone know how the ones at World Market hold up?
      Thanks!

Have you checked out Bemz? http://www.bemz.com/

I have those same parsons chairs from Ikea and I'm thinking about changing them from white. The Bemz site has so many choices for slipcovers that supposedly fit Ikea furniture but I'm chicken and want to know if anyone else has used them before. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I was off to Ikea today when I got a call from my DH about an issue with my daughter. Those issues must come first, but Wednesday an Ikea visit is in store:: four barstool chairs w/matching table, decorative container to hang on bathroom wall showcasing fall foliage, blinds for basement windows, possibly artwork for basement walls and a side table for the new sectional.

Don't feel bad about the dining room — so glad someone else has the kind of occasional mess we do! The chairs look AWESOME!

I know that mess when I see it. Mine will be home in 18 days and I'm COUNTING DOWN.. even if it means 30 loads of laundry.. He's home!

    I bet you're happy girl!

Love the chairs too! At least they're being used? Even if it's for a catch all.. It's not a 400.00 catch all, a more frugal one!

I'm hoping this means that your hubby is home from his training! And as soon as he gets his gear put away, I imagine you'll be REALLY glad to have him back!

Your chairs look awesome, by the way. I had no idea you could find those at IKEA. I need to get myself in the car and make the trip!

I USED to love Ikea, when I lived near one. However, I recently moved to Colorado, and there isn't a single store in the whole state. Yesterday, I thought I would just bite the bullet and pay shipping to have an awesome Expedit desk unit delivered, but I cannot justify spending $350 for shipping a $250 desk. Sorry IKEA- you just priced yourself out of my range. Back to relying solely on Craigslist, thrift stores, and yard sales.

I have the same chair in my craft room. Sooo comfy! Your photos of your husbands mess are giving me flashbacks, my husband was in the military for 23 years. Amazing how they can make such a mess, isn't it?

My hubby is in the same line of work as yours and completed the same training some years ago. I hate to tell you, the longer they stick with it, the more gear they collect. It turns grown men into kids in a candy store.

I saw those chairs at Ikea last week and I wanted them immediately. However, my husband is messier than my 3 year old and those chairs would be covered in stains and who-knows-what within 5 minutes of owning them. HOW DO YOU KEEP THEM WHITE?
