Dining Room Addition

by Chris on June 6, 2012

OK. So I’m talkin’ house goals again. I’m in month 6 of the year, and I’m almost there! Not bad. I swore that I was going to eradicate the ugly light disease around here, and I’m a step closer.  So here’s the chandelier in our dining room. Not ugly by any means, but it was never what I wanted. I lived with it. For 8 years.

I looked and shopped and  scoured for months. Oh I found a ton of them that I love. I just couldn’t afford them.  But this one? This was the one I would pine after.

Sarah Richardson Sausalito

  • When I first found it, it was $850. No way.
  • Then it was $652. Can’t do it.
  • Then…Joss and Main had it. For $429. Ugh. Who can afford that?!

Troy Lighting Chandelier

Well, I guess someone who’s been saving for months and months and has waited more than enough time for it. That’s who. So in my shopping cart it went. And then I sweated over my purchase.

Admittedly, I’m cheap. I will rarely (ever?) spend this kind of money on something like this, but it was worth the splurge.

I guess years of frugality go out the window when you fall in love with that one piece, eh? I’m not the only one who’s done this in the name of love, am I?

P.S. If you haven’t heard of Joss and Main, run over there and sign up (for free). They have amazing deals!! Just click on the image below (and no, they have NO idea who I am. :)

Ohh, this is my favorite light fixture right now and I want it in my dining room! I don’t have it fro all of the reasons listed above. Boo. It looks lovely in your home!

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:07 pm

Thank you so much!

Suzanna June 6, 2012 at 4:06 pm

Oooh, it’s beautiful! I figure, as long as you’ve saved up for it, you can afford one splurge, right? :)

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:06 pm

Good thinking, Suzanna! Thank you!

Kristen @ More Than Mulberriesn June 6, 2012 at 4:15 pm

BEAUTIFUL!!!! I like how the one you bought doesn’t have the exposed bulbs – those bother me! And we all know my opinion matters the most here. It looks beautiful in the room, sometimes you really need that one “special/expensive” piece to pull everything together. (At my house it’s the the tissue paper butterfly artwork with the fruit loop antennae.)

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:06 pm

You’re right–your opinion is everything. As I was about to purchase it, I kept thinking, “Oh, I hope Gayle approves of this.” Whew!! So glad you do! Thanks, girly!

Centsational Girl June 6, 2012 at 4:16 pm

Totally makes the room & worth every penny, LOVE that fixture!!!!

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:05 pm

Thanks, friend! You’re right–worth every penny. :)

Megan June 6, 2012 at 4:31 pm

It’s gorgeous!!!

Laura at Top This Top That June 6, 2012 at 4:31 pm

fabulous!! It certainly is the statement for your room! enjoy your splurge.

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:05 pm

Thank you, Laura! So far, so good. :)

Kimberly from Serendipity. June 6, 2012 at 4:31 pm

Every great design has one AMAZING element…this is it! It’s the kind of fixture that you build an entire room around! It’s your “wow” factor! Congrats, it’s beautiful.

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:04 pm

Agreed, Kimberly! It’s a statement piece, and I don’t see myself hating it for the next eight years. :)

Jenny@EvolutionofStyle June 6, 2012 at 4:46 pm

AWESOME!! I really think when you search for something like this and find “the piece” that speaks to you, it’s totally worth it (and even better when you score it on sale). Had you “settled” on something else, every time you saw it, you would have looked at it with buyer’s remorse. I’m guessing this chandy makes you happy every time you look at it. :-)

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:04 pm

Exactly, Jenny! I keep walking in the room just to look at it. Guess that means it was a good purchase. :)

Sherry June 6, 2012 at 4:52 pm

I’m frugal like you are, but sometimes it’s worth the plunge. If it helps to finish things so you move on, then it’s worth it. Enjoy it!

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:03 pm

True, Sherry. I am enjoying it! It was worth the splurge! :)

Anna @ Take the Side Street June 6, 2012 at 4:52 pm

It’s beautiful, and just the bit of wow we all need in our rooms! Nothin’ wrong with saving your pennies for something you want, and beautiful lighting can be expensive anyway. I say way to get such a good deal on it, girl :) Aaaand, I’m officially jealous. Haha :)

Katie @ Wildwood Creek June 6, 2012 at 5:10 pm

What a great statement piece! This gamble paid off beautifully! You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away and know when to run.

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:03 pm

Ha! Kenny Rogers knows his stuff, doesn’t he? Well said, Katie!

Judy June 6, 2012 at 5:44 pm

Ha! You’re not alone. I have lusted after something that I finally just break down and buy it. My mom always told me it’s better to buy something you love, because after time you will forget how much it cost, but you never forget if you settle for anything less than what you really wanted. I love your chandelier.

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:02 pm

Thank you, Judy. I totally agree. I think your mom knows what she’s talking about. :)

jessica@fourgenerationsoneroof June 6, 2012 at 5:53 pm

What a gorgeous new piece for your room! Sometimes it’s necessary to splurge but you know what, you saved so much in other areas I’m sure so it all evens out :) That’s what I tell myself!

Chris June 6, 2012 at 6:02 pm

Yes! I like the way you think, Jessica. That’s what I kept telling myself.

Gina June 9, 2012 at 10:05 pm

Beautiful!! Love your blog, been lurking for a while now…

Melissa @ The Inspired Room June 6, 2012 at 6:46 pm

It is beautiful! I did the same thing with my Anthropologie curtains. Who spends that kind of money on curtains? I did. Why? Because I never spend money and I loved THOSE curtains. No substitute would do. I don’t regret it one bit.

:-) Lovely light fixture!!!

Allison @ Cozy Home Interiors June 6, 2012 at 8:13 pm

Looks great!! Brings the room together really nicely. Congrats on your BHG visit. That’s awesome!!

Barbara Grooms June 6, 2012 at 8:38 pm

Great purchase Chris! Judy’s mom said it perfectly. Why go through life regretting not buying the piece you love. I have found over the years that the pieces I waited and saved up for have given me the most satisfaction. I like the idea of one really nice item that pops the room . I’m happy you waited and got what you really LOVE…..Mom

Kim @ Plumberry Pie June 6, 2012 at 9:31 pm

worth it – love. so true…surround yourself with the things you LOVE cause you’d probably end spending the same amount or more trying to fill the void with mediocre pieces, replacing it with another mediocre…again and again. know what i mean? enjoy!!!

Stephanie@cre8tive June 6, 2012 at 10:57 pm

Well I think you got it for a GREAT price, and it is well worth the money spent. I love Joss & Main, I have purchased many items from them, it can get kind of addicting. The fixture makes the room. And really, if you live with it for the next 8 years {like you did your last one}, that is only 15 cents a day! That’s a steal :)

Our Creative Life June 7, 2012 at 1:27 am

Definitly noyt the only one! Just think about it this way….you deserve it because of all the money you saved being frugal. After all you also got it at discount too. Just enjoy it!

Liz June 7, 2012 at 5:26 am

Looks lovely, well worth the splurge! I am moving in to a “fixer upper” and lighting is EXPENSIVE…boo!

frank June 7, 2012 at 4:31 pm

You did good =) the new addition was definitely worth the splurge, i wonder if you can make it? the outer pattern with something like wood veneer? what do you think?

Carol June 8, 2012 at 9:44 am

What great shopping and will-power — 50% lower than the original $850 cost — you deserve it! And it looks so beautiful. I agree with Judy above, about loving something and experiencing that joy every time you enter the room. I once went out to buy an oven, and came home with a stunning chandelier instead. When I walk into my dining room, though, it doesn’t matter that I’m still cooking on that horrid old oven — the chandelier just makes the room sing. Good for you!

Courtney {a thoughtful place} June 8, 2012 at 11:10 am

Yay!!! It’s so beautiful in there. I am so excited for you. Enjoy every minute of that pretty little chandy!

Andrea June 8, 2012 at 4:25 pm

It looks awesome in your dining room…definitely worth the splurge.

Brandy June 8, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Wow gorgeous room, seriously. I posted a question on your buffet tutorial if you can elo me… I will be forever grateful.

Liz Chaisson Thompson June 10, 2012 at 10:07 pm

Wow, Chris, what a beautiful room! Thank you for sharing it. I stumbled upon you via a Google search and I’m your newest follower.

Chris June 12, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Well thanks so much, Liz! Welcome!

Julie @ PushingTwigs June 12, 2012 at 8:54 am

I love the fixture (unique, but simple and very elegant) and the room is gorgeous. Noticed the “nemesis” snoozing in there so he must like it, too.

I think you chose well. IMO, you are “allowed” to splurge on a few nice things for your home. At least you didn’t pay full price!

Shaunna June 17, 2012 at 12:22 pm

Gorgeous. LOVE it–and totally worth it. CANNOT WAIT TO SEE YOU!!!
:-)

Shelley @ Calypso In The Country June 21, 2012 at 7:41 am

It was meant for that room – perfect!

Emily June 23, 2012 at 10:59 pm

I love your new light fixture, but your old one isn’t too shabby. Do you need someone to take it off your hands?

Chris June 24, 2012 at 10:38 pm

Thanks, Emily! I sold it on Craigslist. :)
