Coastal Bathroom

by Chris on March 7, 2011

Back in July, I decided I needed to do something to my kids’ bathroom. The white on white just wasn’t working for me, and I needed something different. The only problem is that this was back in July…of 2008. Yes. That’s when this “remodel” began, and it is finally finished.

The before pictures are also before I had a good camera. It also helps emphasize how much better the afters are. You with me still? Ok. I give you the before.

painting bathroom cabinets

Don’t get me wrong—I LOVE white. It’s my favorite color. But with no window and well, no window, it just didn’t do it for me. You ready for the after? How ‘bout a during? Still with the crappy camera.

painting bathroom cabinets

Alright. No more messin’ around. Here’s the after…

nautical bathroom

Amazing what a new camera will do, eh? Well, that and some beadboard, crown molding, and a ton of absolutely perfect accessories.

coastal bathroom

This angle gives you a much better idea of what the beadboard looks like. (Having no natural light in here proved to be VERY tricky when photographing.) I decided on the wider plank beadboard—I think it looks more coastal—and I would have gone even wider if I could have found it!

coastal bathroom

My favorite item in the room was also the least expensive. I found this little printer’s/stamp box for $5.00 at a flea market, and it now houses shells that we’ve collected on our family trips to the beach. L-o-v-e.

nautical bathroom

Needless to say, I am so glad this room is done! It took a lot of work (and some hard labor from my FIL), but I’m thinking it was totally worth it!

beach bathroom

Because I never know how to approach these “room reveals”, I guess I’ll just see if you have any questions. If you’re anything like me, you do! There are a few things I should probably share with you (painting the cabinets, making the mirror frame, baseboards, and shelf, blah, blah, blah), but for now I hope you enjoy!

Oh wow Chris – your new camera takes amazing shots! ;) I really think this is so beautiful. Fantastic job friend! What kind of "bead board" is that? Or is it just planking – like 1×4's? Seriously – this is perfection. Just book yourself a ticket to SLC so you can start working on my house now, ok?!

Anna @ Take the Side Street March 7, 2011 at 4:53 am

It's beautiful!!! I'm jealous of the box, my dad brought something similar back from India in the 60's and a few years ago my dang brother stole it for HIS house. Haha! ;) Seriously though, love the room — love the wide beadboard too. Great job!

Hi, I have a question about your towels. How do you keep them hanging? I just put some glass knobs in my bathroom to hang towles & they keep slipping off. I thought about sewing a loop of ribbon to hang them.

Dream Mom March 8, 2011 at 4:54 am

It looks fantastic! Love the colors. Love the shell box. Love everything. The rug just makes it too. Some rooms just take a while to come together but I think your bathroom was well worth it. What I like most is that I can see how a boy or a girl would really like the room. What do your kids think?

Linda June 21, 2011 at 8:14 pm

Gorgeous!!!! Are those boat oars next to the sand dollar picture? If so could you let me know where you got them? Everything is so beautiful!

Linda

Chris June 21, 2011 at 8:40 pm

Hi Seasidestyle–

If I know what you’re talking about, I think they’re just black candle sticks I found at Kohls years ago. Hope that helps. :)

Jane June 21, 2011 at 9:43 pm

Love the transformation! I’ve been thinking of using bead board in my bathroom…easier to cover than to sand and paint over the bright yellow walls, snakes, frogs, and lizards (yes…it was a boys’ bathroom…but they’re grown and gone now). Where did you find those adorable rugs? They would be perfect here…
Jane (artfully graced)

Chris June 21, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Thanks Jane! I found them at Cost Plus World Market. They were $16 a piece. Good luck!

Beach Coast Style June 22, 2011 at 3:36 am

wow!!! what a tranformation!!! I love everything about it! and I soooo love the black cabinets!

Amy June 24, 2011 at 6:23 am

Hi there! I just found your blog ,and love this bathroom transformation, it’s beautiful!

I have a few questions- did you make the monogram artwork, and how?
How do you keep the towels from falling off.. are those doorknobs?
What kind of camera do you have?

thanks!

Chris June 24, 2011 at 1:18 pm

Hi Amy! I did posts on all of your questions. I think the monogram art is before the reveal, but I did a “resource post” that might help with the other questions after. If you can’t find it, by all means let me know. I’ll get it for you! Thank you!

P.S. I have a Canon T1i–I’m madly in love with it!

Christine June 26, 2011 at 2:45 am

I’m so in love with this bathroom!!!!!! I’ve been trying to do coastal in our pool/daughters bathroom, but its coastal-done-so-wrong….I love how this is so subtle, and I love that you painted the ceiling, it’s so refreshing, I just might have to do this :)

Crystal July 9, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Just wanted to let you know that I showed off your gorgeous bathroom on my blog yesterday. :)

Gigi July 12, 2011 at 6:46 pm

Beautiful! I would love to know what products and color you used on the cabinets?!

jessica August 18, 2011 at 4:40 pm

I absolutely LOVE this bathroom. It’s just enough of everything.

Lisa Nelson October 23, 2011 at 10:20 am

We just painted the foyer a bright aqua/teal. We have old charcoal seascapes with black/dark frames that will be hung there. I am going to copy this bathroom idea for the bathroom off the foyer. It’s perfect!

We live in an old farmhouse (1891) on an island in the chesapeake bay and it’s perfect for our house.

Thank you!

dj November 28, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Could you explain how you did the monogram pictures. The link for that project doesn’t say anything when you click on it.

Dana December 10, 2011 at 12:37 pm

What type of tile do you have in the tub? I absolutely love the floor to ceiling bead board look, but I am not sure how it will look next to a tub that is completely surrounded (to the ceiling) with subway tile. Also, what material is the beadboard made out of? I am thinking of going the PVC route, but I was just curious what you used.

Your bathroom is absolutely beautiful by the way! I would never know there was no natural light in that bathroom since everything looks so light and bright!

Candace December 15, 2011 at 11:20 pm

My eyebrows seriously shot up and my jaw fell when I saw the after pictures. You did a wonderful job.

Chris December 16, 2011 at 7:59 pm

Ha! That’s a great visual, Candace. Thank you!!

Laura at Top This Top That January 1, 2012 at 9:06 am

Cindy January 4, 2012 at 10:29 pm

JoJo January 21, 2012 at 7:20 pm

Love the color scheme and the accessories. Off to find shells at my beach!

Paula January 31, 2012 at 8:47 am

I love this bathroom! You did a great job. I tried to see the monogrammed art from your project gallery but it was just a picture. Does a post go along with it? Is my computer having issues seeing the post? I’d really love to see theist if it is there.

april January 31, 2012 at 9:00 am

Gorgeous !!!! Where did you find such wide plank beadboard??

Chris January 31, 2012 at 10:44 pm

Thank you, April! I found it at Lowes. I wish I could have found it even wider.

Bobrick February 8, 2012 at 12:27 pm

Very, VERY nice remodeling job. It just looks so much better. I’m sure the camera helps as well. Almost makes me want to redo mine.

Lesli @ BeautifullyCoastal.com February 13, 2012 at 9:52 am

On a scale of ‘one to wow’ it’s a WOW PLUS! Great job!

Vicki February 14, 2012 at 4:02 pm

First let me start by saying WOW….I love your bathroom, it looks great and such an inspiration! I wanted to ask how the vanity is holding up? I am ready to paint mine and was curius. It is the vanity in our guest bathroom so if yours can withstand family use I figure my guest bath should have no problems. Again great job!

Robin M. March 20, 2012 at 1:31 pm

Beautiful!! Would you share how you did the monogram art? Thanks!!

Chris March 22, 2012 at 10:16 pm
Carli March 22, 2012 at 4:10 pm

I just keep looking at the pix of your bathroom and being BLOWN AWAY! That being said, I NEED your towel rack/shelf! Where did you get it or did you put a couple pieces together? Please share since we just did a bathroom remodel and I have been dragging my feet on the towel rack bc I don’t just want any old towl rack, I want this!!! But I can’t find anything like it! Please please help me! THANKS!!!!

Chris March 22, 2012 at 10:11 pm

Thank you, Carli! I actually built it out of some scrap wood and a wall shelf I already had. I just screwed some knobs onto it and screwed the shelf onto the wall. This post kind of explains and shows some close ups of the shelf and towels. I hope it helps!

Patti March 22, 2012 at 4:31 pm

I love, love , love the bead board on the walls. That doesn’t look like regular bead board because the boards are wider. Is that something you had special order? The colors are also great. White is so crisp. Great Job!!!

Chris March 22, 2012 at 8:35 pm

I found the wide plank beadboard at Lowes, Patti! Thank you!!

Maggie April 8, 2012 at 7:58 pm

Really cute, good job!

Rhonda May 1, 2012 at 5:24 pm

sarah May 31, 2012 at 6:31 pm

Chris June 2, 2012 at 10:36 pm

Chris July 10, 2012 at 8:40 pm

Well, thank you, Stacey! That’s really nice. I appreciate it!

Apple Tess July 25, 2012 at 2:25 pm

Beautiful! I love the black and the beach theme!

We are painting our bathroom cabinets black this week. Would love to know how you did the mirror frames– please do tell! :) Thanks!

Chris July 30, 2012 at 5:46 pm

Oh gosh, Apple Tess. It was a total hack job. Two things I am NOT good at–math and cutting angles. Both of which you need. :) I used some inexpensive trim from Lowes and just squared them up on the floor. Then I used some liquid nails to secure it to the mirror. I caulked the seams and painted. There are some great tutorials out there if you need BETTER information. ;)

Apple Tess August 6, 2012 at 6:17 pm

That doesn’t sound too bad. It looks really gorgeous– definitely not a hack job! Thanks for the information!

Karnam Lodi July 28, 2012 at 8:48 pm

Howdy are using Wordpress for your site platform? I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get
started and create my own. Do you need any html coding
knowledge to make your own blog? Any help would be really appreciated!

Chris July 30, 2012 at 5:38 pm

Yes, Karnam. I am using Wordpress. However, I have a designer that does all of it for me. I’m afraid I really can’t help with html! Sorry!!

Crystal P August 2, 2012 at 9:08 am

Chris,

Your bathroom became my inspiration! The hubby and I have your photo taped to our bathroom wall during our re-do! What color white did you use on the beadboard? and did you paint the molding and walls the same white?

Crystal

Chris August 3, 2012 at 1:25 am

Ha! I’m so flattered, Crystal. :) I went with Cotton Balls by Ben Moore, and I absolutely adore it. It’s juuust enough creaminess to take the edge off of it being too white. And yes–I wanted it very streamlined, so I painted everything the same. Good luck! Love to see pictures when you’re done!

Sandy September 12, 2012 at 12:08 am

How did you make the starburst mirror in the bathroom makeover?

Chris September 12, 2012 at 7:56 pm

I didn’t, Sandy. I purchased it at Hobby Lobby!

Haydee Santiago September 14, 2012 at 2:10 pm

Hi Chris,
I love this coastal bathroom re-do – it looks amazing. I have started decorating my home using coastal decor as well. One question – what color did you use on the ceiling?
– Haydee

Chris September 16, 2012 at 11:45 am

I have looked everywhere for the paint I used, and I can’t remember. :( I know it took a couple of colors because I didn’t like the first one. I’ll continue to look. Sorry!

Desiree October 29, 2012 at 5:26 pm

It is beautiful. You did an amazing job. GORGEOUS!
