Fork and Spoon Art

April 23, 2009 by Chris

Hi.  It’s me.  The 35 year old woman with the 79 year old back.  I’m vertical now, so I had to celebrate by going to a consignment shop.  A few months ago I had seen these in Pottery Barn catalog. (Sorry, couldn’t find a bigger picture.)  They were priced at $149.00.  Uh…wha?

img2m_thumbnail

I thought they were neat, but I never thought much of them.   It’s not like I was madly in love with them or anything.  Then I saw these.

IMG_5060 Wanna know how much I paid for them?  $1.99 a piece.  That’s $3.98.  And don’t think I didn’t need a calculator to figure that out.

IMG_5056

I’ve had this blank spot in my kitchen/eating area for years, and I’ve never been able to decide on what to put there.  Luckily, my frugalness decided for me.  I don’t figure I’ll find anything else I like nearly as much for only $3.98.

IMG_5062

Here’s the view from the living room.  I like how it ties the kitchen and eating area together, yet seems to blend in with the living area.  However, I don’t like how my husband looks like he’s plotting how he’s going to kill me.

LOL! Your humor cracks me up…about your husband, not your decorating!

That is amazing! What a deal, and I like the ones you found better than Pottery Barn’s! I love them over the door!

Whoot whoot…yea!! I love them as well and will gladly take them off your hand when your $3.98 frugalness wants them no more.
How can your husband not be as happy as we are about your find? 🙂

Your husband face it too funny, Now, I gotta go looking in my garage for my spoon and fork.. My best friend came to visit me a few months ago and when she saw my spoon and fork hanging on the wall in my kitchen, She said, ” you know thats ole fashion” she really picked on my decor, so I took it down..because I do remember my mom having the mega utensils up.. Thanks for sharing, see I knew they were still in style.

    April 23, 2009 at 2:36 am

I swear I sold those on a garage sale a few years back. I bought the same fork and spoon at a garage sale. Had them in my studio for a couple of years laying in my “need to paint them prettier” pile. It never happened. My husband put them on our garage sale. I’m sad now. Great find!

good find and great deal. I would love to know the kind of person who could/would pay $149.00 for a large spoon and fork–I just can’t imagine. Victoria has a spoon she found at goodwill—she hasn’t used it yet. Maybe I’ll have to steal it away.

LOL! The look on his face is priceless. Oh and I love the ginormous utensils. Funny, my parents had a set of those in their kitchen over 30 years ago! I should have stored them away:)

  15. Katy says

    April 23, 2009 at 3:00 am

If he’s anything like my husband he’s thinking “why the hell is she hanging up a fork and spoon on the wall when I could USE THOSE”.

    Men.

  17. The Momma says

    April 23, 2009 at 3:03 am

Oh, that face is familure. I get the same one from my husband when he’s trying to figure out if I really spent 4.00 on something new or really spent 149.00 and just scratched the 1 and the 9 off the price tag. Wait what? Oh, you don’t do that. Oh, me either. What weirdos.

🙂 Glad your back is better!

  18. Vivienne says

    April 23, 2009 at 3:04 am

Not only can I NOT BELIEVE your got them for less than $4, but they are so much cuter than PB’s!

As far as your hubs, well, I can understand. He looks comfy, hanging out on the couch in his sweatshirt… chillin’ . When I’m in that mode I am usually not keen on photo ops. 🙂

However, he should still be giddy about your barstools and your fab finds, over all. 🙂

Sorry about your back. If it makes you feel better, I’m 31 and my back is horrible, too. I think the kids do it to us! Carrying around babies and carseats and diaper bags just ruins the back.

Great finds at the thrift store. Much better than PB prices!!

I must ask.. is your sofa white? Do you have issue keeping it clean/ungrungy (is that a word??) Please stop by my blog and a couple of posts down I debate my desire to redo my living room including my wanting a white couch. (2 kids and dog… luckily the dog is white!) I’d love your opinion/advice. And if you can’t already tell… I love your room!

No – your husband is thinking “She bought an oversized spoon and a fork and now she’s blogging about it.”
Dan asks me that all the time – “are you blogging about this?!?” Um, yes, I am. Great find on the giant utensils. Certainly not a portion control help, but on days when you get super hungry, just turn to the shovel. 😉

First of all, the utensils are better than the pottery barn set. Secondly, do you know where all the sharp implements in your house are? I think you husband may. Third – What is SITS? Fourth, I totally commiserate with you about the back pain. Feel better soon!

  38. Jennifer Juniper says

    April 23, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Ahhh, the old fork and spoon…it used to be that every kitchen growing up had a set of these.

My aunt used to pull the spoon off the wall when her kids were bad and paddle them with it! I saw it once and the love affair with the giant fork and spoon abruptly ended right then and there.

Did you see the big fork and spoon episode of Everybody Loves Raymond? Classic.

I do agree that your husband looks like he is plotting something with that big fork.

Maybe he thinks you are having an affair with a giant that comes over for breakfast after he leaves for work. Better be nice 🙂

    April 23, 2009 at 1:15 pm

LOL at your husband!!! I agree with a few of the other commenters who mentioned they like the ones you found better than the PB version. They have a sense of nostalgia to them. I remember in the 70’s and 80’s growing up and seeing similar peices in kitchens! I love that!

    April 23, 2009 at 1:20 pm

Fabulous find…and I’m dying laughing at your husband’s expression! That look gets thrown around in our house a lot. Usually when I’m talking about fabric, or hanging something, or my favorite “honey I need help with…” and then que the look. But I like your fork and spoon much better than Pottery Barn’s. Wow, paired up with your chair deal you can’t help but smile when you look at your kitchen 🙂

My Mom used to have a pair like that in a frame hanging in our “very seventies” kitchen. When she remodeled she took them down and I think they were sold at a yard sale about 15 years ago. I remember back then thinking they were ghastly – but I would love to have them now to hang in my kitchen. Funny how styles and tastes totally change through the years.

This is the first blog i have read that has proper made me laugh out loud – in regards to your comment about your husband,he does look a little scary there.
Love them, they look great in that spot too, plus that was a huge saving and they actually look better than the other one’s.

I did my own ginormous fork and spoon post today and linked to you, of course.

But do you realize that you managed to write this post without using the words "spoon", "fork" or "silverware"? Sheesh!

I knew that you had done this post but no matter what I searched on, I couldn't find it! I finally just scrolled through until I got to it. Major points for persistence. I was on a mission!
