Window Boxes

May 18, 2009 by Chris

Hmmm…can you tell what this post is going to be about?  Some of you have been reveling in your new spring blooms, but it’s just barely happening for us up in Michigan.  See all those snarly looking shrubs along the garage?  Those should be beautiful blooms of Korean lilacs, but they still haven’t opened up.

However, this is a good opportunity to let you know my next outdoor project.

IMG_5297

I’ve got some windows on my garage that are just begging to be dressed up! (Of course, some trimmed shrubs might help that begging just a little!)

IMG_5295 Prepare yourselves for a grand tour of some beautiful window boxes!  Sit back and enjoy!

Some advice on window boxes?  NEVER go too small.  The bigger arrangement, the better.  If your house sits off the road (as mine does), you’re going to want it to make a statement.

The one below is my absolute favorite.  How can you look at this picture and not feel a smile come on?

Last, but certainly not least…

window-boxes-de-4342922 Once our weather finally gets a little more consistent, I’ll be off to the store for window boxes and flowers!  My mom lives a few minutes away from a Smith and Hawken outlet store (I know—must be nice), so hopefully I’ll score something there!

Good luck with your project! Can’t wait to see them.

Window boxes are on our to-do list also, but I am so wishy-washy about what I want. We need two on the side of the house, where we enter and the trim of our home is black; but, I wonder about heat with the black. Then again, I plan to really fill them up, as you said, so they could be white. Are you going with wood or plastic? Wood with a plastic insert?

    Thanks!

    Daryl

Those pictures are beautiful! The exterior of our house has the same basic structure as yours and I'm dying for some window boxes on the garage windows.

Can't wait to see what you find a S&H. I've been looking too but so far haven't found anything that I love.

    One more thing…

If you happen to see a couple of these at S&H, be sure to pick them up for me. 😉

I’ve got my window boxes planted (on Mother’s Day!).
    http://thelopsidedhouse.blogspot.com/2009/05/happy-late-mothers-day-more.html

(the photos of the boxes are in the middle of the post and you’ll have to keep in mind they’re freshly planted…it’ll take them a few weeks to get going).

I asked hubby to make me boxes for the upper windows for Mother’s Day and so far no go. 🙁

Thanks so much for the inspiration pictures! I currently just have one window box, on my shed. It is small, but I love it! And our shed is painted to match our house, and it faces the road so I enjoy making the window box look pretty!

This weather is definitely playing with my emotions. Yesterday I wore a coat, and jeans.
    It’s almost June. Ridiculous.
We’ll probably get the good weather around August, just in time for it to be fall again! 😉

I love window boxes, too. They’re on our “to do” list. I grew up in MI and all my family is still there. I know what you mean about flowers/ bushes blooming much later than other places. It makes them that much sweeter when they do bloom. Good luck to you and your windows!

Love all your window boxes. I have a special attraction to the boxes, also.
I love the one’s on older houses like in Italy where they use those deep, bright
colors like royal blue and even purple.

You blog is very attractive……… I love that all the colors lend so beautifully.

I have wondered about your font ? Did you get it from blogger, or your font list ? To me it make a blog look even better. I haven’t a clue how to move one over, though. Do you have any tips ?

    Can’t wait to see yours!
