Remember this pain in my butt that took me forever to finish beautiful piece of furniture that my grandparents gave me? Well, what I don’t think I mentioned is that I also got a buffet from them.
I forgot a “before” picture, but I think you can imagine what it looked like.
The good thing about this piece is that it had about 35 years worth of Pledge build up on it. THAT was fun to get off. In the end, she turned out pretty fantastic. Wanna see her?
Here you go…
It was time consuming, but when I think about the extra storage I get, it makes me giddy.
I mean, look at that roll of shelf liner! I had NO idea where I was going to put it, and BAM!—new buffet to the rescue!
It’s considerably bigger than the table I had there before, so that gives quite the justification to go out and buy new Halloween and Thanksgiving decor!
So many curves to it! I love that.
A break down for you…the buffet was free and the paint was what I had left over from all the other millions of projects I’ve done in black.
The new hardware cost me about $30.00. I’d say that’s a pretty good deal for a buffet that I’m in love with.
Anne says
Fantastic! The paint is so smooth, looks like it came that way!
VidaModa says
absolutely stunning transformation, it reminds me of the great black buffet from Pottery Barn! I agree with you about all the extra storage that a buffet provides…I guess we just have to shop more to fill them 🙂 LOL

Hi, you don't know me, but I check in here pretty often to see your neat stuff! I am wondering if you would give a step by step tutorial of refinishing furniture like the one you posted about today. I would love to do this but have no idea where to start. I am assuming you have to sand off the old finish, then what? Prime with something? And are you using spray paint, or painting on with a brush? Do you put another finish on it to make it shine and be durable? Fill us in on how to really do this ourselves! You are an expert!
Kim @ NewlyWoodwards says
I love love love this. The hardware is awesome.

cottagewish says
Amazing, beautiful, in awe. You don't know how happy I am to see that IT CAN BE DONE. I spent last weekend totally frustrated cause the hutch I was painting black didn't turn out as I had hoped. I primed and used left over paint, but it looked blah. Dull and splotchy. Did you use satin, eggshell, semi? Do tell.
lexiis says
Honestly, that buffet is absolutely gorgeous! Your ability to envision such a beautiful end product from the original is amazing! That's definitely a piece that you should keep in the house for years!

Wow! I'm absolutely impressed…once again! This is gorgeous.
Also, would you help me win a necklace pretty please? It would mean so much to me if you would leave a quick comment on this post I have pasted below…if I get the most comments, I win. 🙂 Thank you!

Blarney says
I think it's karma that we both just refinished furniture in black. 😉 Looks awesome! So when are you going to deliver her to my house? Seriously, dining room is third room on the list so I've got some serious second hand shopping to do. Unfortunatley Mr Blarney has put the kabash on any refinishing until he gets the basmenet floor sealed. Not being able to wander the 2nd hand is just driving me crazy. MEN!

I love the contrast of the buffet and the art on the wall. I love your site! In fact your back door inspired me to do mine. However, I WILL NOT be showing a picture of it. You see, I didn't get vinyl numbers. I tried to be a rockstar and FREE HAND them. Big mistake. HUGE!

OMG! Thank you thank you thank you! We have a "beautiful french provincial" dining table and buffet that we picked up from an old friend. I do mean old ~ in her 80s! My husband really likes it but I HATE how it looks now. I'm going to try to redo it using your exact instructions! I'll let you know how it turns out… though it may have to wait until spring as we've had snow here.
Your home looks amazing!

That's so good it's insane. So… if a person already had black paint that wasn't the secret BM low lustre magic paint but happened to be a different BM paint in a satin finish, do you think that would work? And for paint amount purposes, did you really do two coats out of a quart on that?
Janeenie says
I like everyone else is wondering what paint/gloss/primer you used. I haven't been able to master the finish either. Please pass on your expertise!!!

Im so super late with this but you did an absolutely beautiful job 🙂 I am going to try this but I can’t find that BM metal/wood paint on their website. Can you possibly recommend a substitute?
