Winter in Michigan requires a LOT of gear. And all that stuff inevitably gets piled up in the mudroom. I had these cabinets custom built a couple of years ago, and they’ve been a game-changer. However, the measurements of the cubbies were impossible to find baskets or bins to place in there. And I mean impossible. So this is how it has looked for way too long.
Enter stage right: Target. Of course! I didn’t want plastic. I wanted a pattern/print. But at $9.99 a piece and nearly fitting the measurements exactly, I had to get them. They immediately lower my blood pressure.
Those little cubbies really take a beating since we use them all the time. Now that they’re in place, I really like that they’re plastic. All those snow-soaked gloves won’t ruin anything, and the basket weave pattern certainly fools the eye.
It’s still a work in progress, but the mudroom is starting to come along. You may notice the corner bench that remains M.I.A. I go back and forth between building it myself or just paying the money to have it built. The “have it built” side of me wins out, but my wallet doesn’t agree. Soon. Maybe…I hope.
So where are we? Here’s the breakdown of what’s been done and what needs to be done.
New rug
New light fixture (not in love with it)
New, new light fixture
Build corner bench
Have seat cushion made
Beef up trim
Love your new cubbies! Will have to check them out at Target — I’ve been browing Target lately for cubbies to use in the new study and media area that I recently created for my kids!
Yep, I have those same plastic baskets in red from Target. They have a woven design on them and don’t SCREAM plastic. Our basement media room is black/white houndstooth with red accents, so the red baskets look great on our black entertainment center. Ours hold the loose items that were driving me nuts like cords, video games, etc, plus the touches or red give a little punch of color. We love ours too. Target is awesome.
I also live in Michigan and I feel your winter gear pain. Your mudroom looks fantastic. I bet it makes the morning rush out the door so much easier. Do you ever feel like I do…like you have turned your children into pack mules just to get all their winter gear to school?
These baskets work great! I think they look good and like you said–plastic. I have to share a great tip I used with my girls when they were young and we had tons of hats/gloves/scarves….the accordian like shoe holders that hang from a rod in your closet! I had one, but bought another at Container Store and chopped off a few “cubbies” since it was too long. You velcro it up and each item/pair of gloves gets a cubby! Works great! As for the bench–you HAVE to get with Sandra of Sawdust Girl. She has a new gig where she skypes with homeowners who have projects they want done and she tells them how to do it (for a fee). Having another blogger would probably be awesome! Check it out! She would come up with the best bench/storage for that little nook!
Those look great Chris. Couldn’t work out better. They fit and look perfect. Can’t even tell their plastic and they look great. Doesn’t it make you feel great when something you wanted goes well! Love and miss you, Mom.
I love those baskets too! I love them because you can place them everywhere and use them in several ways!!!
Love the baskets. I have some cubbies at our cottage that they’d be great in. Also, can you tell us what paint color your walls are? It’s a great neutral and I’m looking for something for my hallway. Thanks!
How lucky to find the exact size, they look perfect there! I love how your mudroom is coming together!
