DIY Custom Closet

January 26, 2015 by Chris

So I was a single working mom for a week, and then I had parent/teacher conferences. Sorry about the absence. I have been trying to get a couple of things done around here, however. The main one being getting alll my closets and cabinets organized. Amazing how out of hand they can get when you don’t stay on them, ya know?

Wanna see how out of hand they can get? It’s embarrassing, but here it is. Guest bedroom closet before…

Let me redeem myself. And quickly. Guest bedroom closet after…

Better, eh? This was one of the most satisfying, yet inexpensive, projects I’ve done. It’s one of those “WHY didn’t I do this sooner?” projects, ya know?

Because it’s in an upstairs guest room, I went with the cheapest plywood I could find. I figured out all my measurements and had the handy employees at Lowes cut it for me. That is a lifesaver! If it were more visible, I would spend a little more money on smoother wood. With paint and some finishing trim, it looks plenty nice for it’s function. After measuring out the space, I mocked up how I wanted it to look. I wanted as much storage as possible, so I brought the shelves out as far as I could without getting in the way of the doors.

We built a bookshelf essentially and screwed it to the wall. Then we added cleats on the sides to add more shelving. The right side still needs a bar, but it will house some hangers for guests who want to hang their clothes during their stay. I used even more space by making the top shelf shallow. This way it can be accessed still. I put spare lamps or shades up there. Who knows. I never go up there.

Because the trim work was so narrow and thin, I used wood glue to adhere it. I taped them into place until they dried, and they’ve been perfect ever since. You might also be able to see that we removed the baseboard behind the shelving I wanted it flush with the wall, so we just cut it out. I’ll cut it and put it back on. Someday.

I love labels, so I used some adhesive ones to specify each shelf (I thought them out before the build). It makes it very easy when putting sheets away or making the beds—especially ‘cause I love white sheets!

The baskets and bins hold random things such as shams, irons, fabric, and extra blankets for guests. Clearly I need more labels.

And if anyone can figure out how to fold sheets so they’re not wobbly, I’m all ears. There’s gotta be a better system!

Beautiful job! I love how WHITE everything is. Very clean.
As for folding sheets- even the video that is floating around pinterest/facebook doesn’t help me fold them any better. Good luck!
