Christmas DIY Decorations

December 16, 2008 by Chris

I don’t know about you, but I’m having a hard time spending more money on Christmas decorations. Don’t misunderstand–I would LIKE to. I just find that I’m barely able to get all my Christmas shopping done, let alone buy decorations! So, my goal in this post is to show you how I shopped around the house to make some new ones this year.

Okay…I’m cheating a little on this one. I bought these on clearance at Hobby Lobby two years ago, and they were in BAD shape. Beat up, worn off, dirty…you name it.

Nothing like a can of spray paint and some irridescent glitter (you hear that, Kimba?!) to make things nice and beautified! Oh man, the pictures just don’t do the sparkle justice!

In case you haven’t noticed, one of my favorite ways to perk something up is to use scrapbook paper. Well, Christmas paper is no exception. Have you SEEN the selection of beautiful paper out there? I buy it without knowing what I need it for. Just don’t tell my husband. As far as he knows, everything has a purpose. So…these rather earth-toned, non-festive candles go from thisto this
Don’t worry–I notice the missing ribbon. I don’t have one that matches yet. I LOVE something that doesn’t necessarily shout Christmas. It’s wintery, Christmas…y, and yet it fits right into the dining room decor.

Okay. This is a little out there for me, but I like it well enough. When you walk into my mudroom from the back door, you see this (FYI–this picture is of an undecorated table).

Keeping the “shop the house” theme in mind, I found some scrap fabric, hot glue (of course), and went to town. Notice the clearance sticker.

I think this is a bit of an improvement. I think it says, “Prepare yourself. Christmas has vomited in this house” as soon as you walk in the door. And what’s more welcoming than the thought of Christmas and vomit?

“Prepare yourself. Christmas has vomited in this house” I LOVE this statement. I laughed out loud. (PS: it sounds just like MY house *giggle*!)

I love it! The glitter, the paper, the vomit! Perfect! All perfect!

And I just found another jar of glitter in a bag that I thought only held cheap pinecones.

It’s red. It’s Martha. It’s fabulous. It’s too close to Christmas. GAH! So much glitter. So little time,

    Cute makeover!

I have two very similar deer, but one is laying down, and the other is standing. They came from JCP several years ago. One of them has a broken leg, but I just jam it back into place when I unpack it. 😉

I like your festive lamp shade too.

Great idea with the candles – I’ve got some that are starting to fade and now I know how to rescue/prolong their life! You are SO AMAZING Chris. I mean, WOW. Why HGTV has not picked you up yet I have no idea. ;)(omit vomit and they might call you)

I’m sort of the same way right now – wanting to decorate but not wanting to spend $$$. I’m “over” some of my Christmas things that I’ve had for so long. I’m ready to sell a lot at a garage sale this summer and update with new at some after Christmas sales!

I see a lamp without a tassel lady…that is a mucho problemo. That’s Spanglish for you’re busted. You re-gifted it didn’t you? You ate the chocolate and re-gifted!!!!!

Maybe Erupted, or Exploded, Christmas, but not Vomit.

The thought of vomit almost kept me from finishing nursing school. My nursie friends used to say, “Tell us the story about when Glenn was throwing up in the bathroom and you fainted and slid down the wall.’ When I said, “I could have broken my neck,” they laughed harder.

    Your decors are inspired.

Is it not even more rewarding when you can put together something as classy as you did just by shopping around your own house? I think I have spent around $45.00 this year on Christmas decorations and all but about $15.00 was spent at the thrift store.so much more rewarding that way, don’t you think? Thanks for sharing!

Love the “present” on the table!
We have french doors that separate our office from the front entrance. I put Christmas wrapping paper on the inside so the decorated side shows through the windows and they look like presents. I love the look! Plus it hides the mess lurking in the office! I’ve got to think of a year-round solution! 🙂

oh, and your house does not scream “Christmas has vomited in this house.” that would be my daycare provider’s house. i swear the woman buys every christmas decoration (w/no theme in mind… some of it is kitschy, some of it is folksy, some of it is TACKY, etc.) available on this earth and puts it all up. ughhh…
