Chalkboard Spider

October 24, 2012 by Chris

Spiders freak. me. out. The fact that I had any desire to do this project is beyond me, but I do love it. The project…not the inspiration.

DIY chalkboard Halloween

Since I have NO artistic ability, I had to get a little creative. I picked up a piece of wood at Lowe’s and had them cut it to the size I needed. Then I spray painted it with some chalkboard paint and covered it with chalk. I had 23 pieces of chalk in the house and not one of them was white. Grr. I went with yellow.

My handy dandy projector proved very helpful again. We no longer use them in my district, so my little one put in an order right away. She uses it all. the. time. I projected a spider silhouette onto the piece of wood and traced it on with chalk. Simple!

I colored it in—with yellow chalk Sad smile—and set it on the buffet.

Of course, I can’t have a “mother” spider without a bunch of babies creeping all over. (Ok. That creeped me out thinking about it.)

Halloween-decorations

These glitter spiders are some of the most realistic I’ve seen, and they’re inexpensive!

With every holiday project, my #1 goal is that my kids like it. Little one walked in and said, “Mom, this is awesome!!” Goal achieved.

I’m not a spider fan either! But, I do think yellow was a perfect color for this one. How great that you made points with your kids! Enjoy these times!

This is incredibly cute! Did you know that in the Japanese culture it is considered good luck if you find a spider in your home? So if they find one, they don’t kill it. Instead they scoop it up, take it outside and set it free. I’m not sure I’d do that if I found a Black Widow or a Brown Recluse, but if it was just a Daddy Longlegs or something non-venomous then I might attempt it.

I agree – the yellow actually looks pretty good! And so true about the spider in the home – we found one in the foyer one day and when my husband stepped on it, thousands of babies took off! I was absolutely creeped out. He ran for the bug spray while the rest of us started stomping! Gives me the chills just to think about it…:)

Love your spider. I sent my daughter the link to your post so she could see it. She owns a live tarantula and is spider crazy.

That’s my kind of spider! I would worry if someone said they actually liked spiders.

    Just found your blog!
    Lovely…
Love the yellow chalk over the white… I think the lack of white actually made this project really interesting as oppose to the obvious choice of white. The color of the spider creates depth and interest.
    You have a lovely blog.

Oh man! Tell Kim I’m going to think of those baby spiders forever. Poor spider mom, she’s dead! Glad the kids love the decorations. It’s always great when their happy huh? My porch has orange lites and pumpkins, sorry, no spiders. Mom

Yea, I’m not that fond of spiders. I like that they help keep down mosquitoes in the summer, but I’d rather not see them. I’m sure they’d rather not see me either! Anyway, your project turned out really cute!
