Camera Strap Idea

March 29, 2010 by Chris

My new camera and I have been building a very good relationship.  There seems to be a bit of a language barrier, however.  She speaks in ISO, Aperture, and White Balance; whereas, I only understand hot glue, fabric, and spray paint.

IMG_0750

I figured things might get better if I could make her a brand new strap cover.  I contemplated typing up a tutorial, but I’m just going to link you to the tutorials I used.  They explained it way better than I could.  And, apparently, they sew better than I do as well. 🙁

IMG_0102

The best part about this project is that it was completely free.  I have tons of fabric waiting to be used for some “prettifying project”, and it came in quite handy.

IMG_0095

Have I ever told you what a messy worker I am?  It’s ridiculous, really.

IMG_0105

I made four and one turned out.  Figures.  I have learned that it is nearly impossible for me to sew a straight line.  Am I missing something here?

IMG_0753

In my defense, the pink one was gathered fabric that was being very difficult for me.  Let’s just say that’s the reason it looks like a snake rather than a camera strap cover.

IMG_0760

I went back and forth between Made by Petchy and Tidy Mom.  Thank you so much to both of you for such great instructions.  Now if you could just teach me how to sew a straight line…

Looks great! I just made myself a padded camera strap cover on Friday but I didn't measure my strap before and took the word of the tutorial I found. It looks pretty good but is 3 inches short (it is 22 inches). For curiosity how long did you have to make yours??

Thanks for the reminder that with my new sewing machine and my new camera I can and should just make one myself! Love them, great job. 🙂

I think they look great! (and I love the pink fabric–would be so fun to make something with it!) Uhm, I am looking for DSLR camera and seeking opinions. Could you tell me what kind you have and if you like it? Thanks!

Oh I am so doing this! I had been thinking about it for awhile because the "canon" branding isn't really my style. Thanks for the links and your results….you inspired me!

Horray! You did great-and I'm inspired to do my own. My husband just bought himself a new camera so our old SLR is all MINE! (insert evil laugh here) Next time (or maybe you're over it like I would be) try backing the pink puckering fabric with a lightweight iron on stabilizer and then cutting it to size.
Thanks for inspiring me all the time! You rock!

yesterday I finally made mine. It was a nightmare. I hate sewing. I hate it. Wish I could love it, but no, hate it. I too cannot sew straight. I tried making two, but my first one was the best. Good job though.

You'll get the camera down though. It is 100 times easier than sewing!

They are precious and it is SAD that I've already thought about a strap for the camera I have not bought yet nor do I have the money for yet. But it will be cute!!

Sewing a straight line IS hard! lol You did a great job on those covers though. 🙂

Looks like you finally made that straight line. Isn't it fun to take material and make something new? Enjoy your new camera and your new strap!

You are being too hard on yourself. Those camera straps are adorable and I like that puckery pink one. You should be proud of yourself. Love & blessings from NC!

Wow you did great! I've wanted to try doing this on my own for a while… and you've inspired me to finally get to it.
And don't worry, I can't sew in a straight line for the life of me.

Do you know that Dan bought me a sewing machine LAST Christmas (as in 2008 Christmas) that I have yet to unpack? I keep saying "I'll set it up when the basement is finished." So maybe you can blame your non line sew skills to the trauma of having to sew at a kitchen table?

I think they turned out super cute…well, except for the snake one. But A for effort Oprah. And in my single girl days, I found that language barriers = great make out sessions. I'm just sayin…

I have so been wanting to do this. Yours turned out fantastic! I should just pull the stuff out and do it.

Sewing a straight line can be easy. Does the strike plate of your machine have little lines with measurements? Usually in eighth inch increments. Use those to as a guide when feeding your fabric through, keeping the edge of the fabric along the line as it feeds through. Or, your machine should have come with a quarter inch foot. In which case you would just guide the fabric through using the right edge of the foot (or any foot for that matter) as your guide. Also, you may have to make sure the pressure on the pressure foot is down enough to hold the fabric steady but not too steady it won't feed through easily. And, if you're sewing something with a very wide seam allowance, try measuring from the needle out to where the seam allowance ends, and place a piece of colored tape on the machine to the right of the strike plate as a guide.

Sheesh . . . sorry to go on 'bout it! You'll get it. And if not, so what! Look how fabulously your project turned out! :o)

Chris you did a FABULOUS job!! did you not see the different sizes mine came out! LOL……..I've made some since then and it get's easier…I actually need to make myself a new one, but I dread putting the strap on and off my camera again..now THAT was hard!!lol

thanks for the linky love too!♥

The first paragraph is one of the reasons I love reading your blog! On so many blogs I just look at the photos but your sense of humor keeps me reading yours!!! Love the camera straps even if they don't have straight lines… like the nester says "it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful!"

I love your straps! I've been meaning to make one for my camera as well. When that will ever happen is another thing altogether. Sewing a straight line is all about cutting the straight line first, then just line it up with the lines on your sewing machine. I think yours look great though!

the straps are great! one of these days when i open my sewing machine box i'll make one of these. 🙂

I did however get all jazzed about organizing and went and bought an armload of those mini-can/bucket type things in the Target dollar spot. Anyway, you're a riot. I heart your blog.
