Lightscoop: My New Favorite!

by Chris on May 15, 2011

Before I say anything else, you need to know that I received no compensation for this post. I’m simply madly in love with this new gadget, and you MUST know about it!

The other day I was stalking perusing Tatertots and Jello, and Jen mentioned this product. It’s called Lightscoop, and it changes the way you’ll take pictures with a flash for-eh-vah.

Truth be told, I shoot everything in manual mode. My friend has the same camera as me, and she shoots entirely in automatic. What a shame, right? But I get it. Some people are just overwhelmed by it all, so they stick with what’s easy. Because there are some situations where you might need a flash, this is just the gadget for you.

All of my “before” shots are first. They are all shot in automatic mode, and each one of them called for a flash to be used—even though they were all shot during the day.

Notice how the befores don’t give off the right coloring, and they’re bouncing light all over the place? Eww.

Here’s my bed-headed little one on the computer. I peruse Tatertots and Jello. She peruses new American Girl dolls. Notice the washed out couch? The over-reflected hair? Check out the after!

I still can’t get over the next one. Shot during the day (around 12:30?). I think I pushed the flash up on this one, so I don’t know that automatic would have called for it. However, look what the Lightscoop did just 7.3 seconds later. Incredible.

And finally, my needs-a-haircut son. He doesn’t peruse. Not when he’s watching Star Wars. He also doesn’t wear a shirt. Like ever. As he puts it, “I need my muscles to breath.” Here’s the before…

And here’s the after. Looks like they were shot at entirely different times, right? The coloring is SO much better.

I’m not a super impulsive buyer (my indecisiveness is a curse, I tell ya!), but as soon as I saw that this bad boy was only $30, I scooped one right up. (Pun intended.)

Easy to install, inexpensive, and spectacular results! Can’t beat that! I put a link to their site on the logo.  Let me know if you take the plunge! I’m anxious to hear if you love it too!

I love my lightscoop! Though, I really should use it more often than I do…. I'm going to go pull it out and play with it again!

Katy May 15, 2011 at 6:21 pm

Your son's comment about muscles needing to breathe cracked me up. My boys said the same thing at about age 2 during their naked phase but it was about a different part of their anatomy. ;) Gonna go check out this light scoop thing now…

What kind of camera do you have? Do you love it or just like it?

Heather May 15, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Wow I was JUST saying I needed something like this!! Thanks for sharing

Wendy May 15, 2011 at 7:31 pm

Oh, I think I must get this! Just ordered my first slr camera and I can not WAIT to get it! I think this will be my next accessory!

And the no shirt is hilarious! Typically one of the first things my son does when he gets home from school is whip off his shirt. Silly boys :) !

Pedaling May 15, 2011 at 8:14 pm

I am convinced!
Thanks, I'll be ordering one for myself!

Jo May 15, 2011 at 8:41 pm

Did you have the regular one or the warming one…I love the difference and hopefully will take better pet photos -thanks

Linda@ Lime in the Coconut May 15, 2011 at 8:52 pm

Ooooh. I have my finger on the button to take the plunge. I never shoot with flash…but there are certainly times I would like a little up-light!

Cool gadg!

Handy Man, Crafty Woman May 15, 2011 at 8:54 pm

I NEED one of these, but I need to get the kind of camera I can attach it to first, lol.

Kristy May 15, 2011 at 9:26 pm

I've been wanting an indirect flash but can't afford one. This looks like an awesome substitue! Thanks for posting. I'm off to purchase one.

I am TOTALLY an impulse buyer, so of course I just ordered one! My camera, Nikon P100, was not listed as a supported model, so I hope it works. I'll post later to tell your readers if it works with Nikon

Tiffany @ Eat at Home May 16, 2011 at 2:03 am

I've been pondering buying one. How do you think it would do with food photos?

The Tiny Team May 16, 2011 at 4:22 am

I think I may just be putting this on my birthday wish list! I end up never using flash…but then things tend to get blurry while I strive for good pictures!

Junkie Gems May 16, 2011 at 4:45 am

Thank you for posting this. I just ordered the warmth. Now I am really excited to get it.

Irene Robertson May 16, 2011 at 1:52 pm

Another blog I follow shoots for the most part entirely indoors due to a sick child and she swears by this too sooooo I guess I'll take the plunge too!

Mrs. Bliss May 16, 2011 at 4:46 pm

I've had my LightScoop for over a year now and LOVE IT! My old farm house has the worst lighting as we have hardly any windows!

Courtney {a thoughtful place} May 16, 2011 at 11:14 pm

I am shocked at the difference. I am trying to shoot everything in manual as well . . but his has me thinking! Thanks for sharing with us and for the great with and without shots.

Lilia May 26, 2011 at 2:29 pm

I ran to B&H Photo yesterday and picked this up after reading your blog. I played around with it in my office and I can already see a difference. I’m so excited to use it and test it out! Thanks for spreading the word! It’s the perfect item to buy if you are on a budget and can’t get a good quality dedicated flash (I’m that person).

Chris May 26, 2011 at 7:25 pm

That’s awesome! It’s fun finding a new product, right? Thanks for letting me know you like it! Enjoy!

Olivia @ Swan White Curtain May 26, 2011 at 9:49 pm

The pics are great! And have you ever watched The Middle? You mentioned your boy never wearing a shirt and the son on that show is ALWAYS walking around in just boxers and socks. It’s pretty funny. :o)

Julie June 9, 2011 at 3:01 pm

I have been on the fence for a year (why I didn’t ask for one for Christmas???). Anyway, just ordered one today, thanks :)

trish July 12, 2011 at 6:59 pm

Love it!! :o)

Annie August 8, 2011 at 10:53 pm

I read your blog awhile back and bought a lightscope because of your great reviews! I can honestly say I’m amazed…it’s such an awesome thing!!! Thanks for the great recommendation!

Kim December 25, 2011 at 9:43 am

I got a lightscoop for Christmas, and am having such a hard time with it?? I shoot in automatic, because I have no idea how to do manual. My pictures without the flash are coming out brighter than the ones with the flash with the light scoop on. I’ve followed their trouble shooting guide, and still don’t get it. So wondering what I am doing wrong??
