The Transformation Begins

by Chris on April 20, 2010

Several weeks ago, I sold my wall unit desk in the hopes to start a craft room in here.  I purchased this dining table for $50.00 off Craigslist.  I love the lines and the measurements.  A “normal” desk was just not a big enough space for me, so this was perfect!

IMG_0419

I wanted quick access to all my tools, so I purchased a frame for $11.00 at Hobby Lobby and painted some pegboard I already had.  I stapled the pegboard into the frame, but I needed some help with the wood slats I wanted on the back.  Enter husband.

IMG_0567

After asking for two weeks, he finished one slat, watched some TV (“Total Drama Island”—really adult stuff)…

IMG_0570

… and took a much needed rest from his hard work.  This is how he rolls people.  Don’t stand in his way.

Wanna see it?

IMG_0680

In case you’re wondering how difficult it is to find cute accessories for pegboard, I’d categorize it in the “very” section of my file.  I had to get a little creative.  The tins below were from the $$ section at Target. I simply placed two pieces of glass from some frames to use as the “shelf”.

IMG_0681

The little mesh basket was from my grocery store.  It was black, so I just painted it.  It houses my “go to” paint colors.  The rest are kept in a different place. I figure I’ll rotate them as needed, but no sense in getting them all out at one time.

IMG_0682

The wire baskets were a happy accident. I found them at Salvation Army several months ago.  I didn’t know what I’d use them for, but I’m glad I bought them! The large one houses my alphabet rub-ons and stickers (I’m a labeler), and the small one fits my sanding sponges perfectly.

IMG_0683

The only thing missing is my glue gun and that’s because I was using it in the other room! All together, I probably spent $20-25.  Totally worth it for some pretty organization.

That looks amazing Chris. I love seeing beautiful organized spaces. I'm having my next We're Organized Wednesday party on April 28th. I would love it if you'd like to join.

Very nice, I really like the frame idea. We got my mom's old table, so ours went downstairs as my new sewing table, so much room, I love it. Terri

It's wonderful! I am turning my office into my little craft studio right now, and I needed this boost to remind me what a lazy butt I've been about it :) It looks great, and it's an awesome feeling to have an inspiring work place to create. Enjoy it!

Katie April 20, 2010 at 2:26 am

you are amazing! the husband photos are so cute! tell him i said so

Pam @ bibbidi-bobbidi-beautiful April 20, 2010 at 3:01 am

Love it! I think the wire GW baskets might have originally been accesories for the ikea jerker desk. My hubby used to have one! I wonder if they still sell similar items? I don't think they make the jerker anymore.

Anonymous April 20, 2010 at 3:49 am

I bought wire baskets like that from ikea about 8 years ago. They hang on a rod (also from ikea) in my laundry room. Maybe they still have them??

passion4pink April 20, 2010 at 3:54 am

Oooo I love it! I am soooo going to steal this idea, when hubby gets his finger out.
Or Mayb I' ll do it myself
Cheers

Olivia @ Swan White Curtain April 20, 2010 at 5:20 am

Eek! I'm looking to do the same thing– standard sized desks just don't cut it for crafts, do they?!

Marianne@Songbird April 20, 2010 at 5:23 am

That craft corner is really coming together. And I am with you on the big desk, when it comes to crafting big surfaces are everything!

Jennifer April 20, 2010 at 6:42 am

Chris this looks great….. but I can't wait to see the window boxes.
Are they white? Large? Simple? Please show us pictures I am in desperate need of making some for our house and I thought I would let you try it first.;)

Jess @ Frugal with a Flourish April 20, 2010 at 9:48 am

Love the Peg Board! Such a great idea!

Lil' Woman April 20, 2010 at 10:33 am

You make it look so easy….I wouldn't have this project done for like 2 months!

Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions April 20, 2010 at 12:11 pm

I wouldn't dismiss Total Drama Island as not serious TV viewing, Chris! I think between that and Sponge Bob, I've become a better person. : )

Love your peg board! It really holds a good amount of supplies, too.

Devon! April 20, 2010 at 12:46 pm

This looks awesome!
I was looking at this while my husband was talking to me – He stopped mid-sentence and said "WOW! What a great idea!"

beermary April 20, 2010 at 1:15 pm

Your pegboard looks great (although the ER nurse in me can see stitches coming with the sharp edges of the glass you're using for shelves – please be careful).

I looked for pegboard solutions (don't have hubby, can't use tools) but they were all so expensive! Finally found this: http://www.organize.com/craft-center-scrapbook-organizer-clear-frosted-pegboard.html

Yours looks better and is cheaper, but for those who can't make…

Also, bought an 8-cube storage shelf (closet maid) at Target for 44 bucks, you can buy cloth bins (tons of color choices) to fit for another 7 bucks each. I plan on using that to help with my tiny tiny scrap room.

Please keep posting pics of your craft room!

Jamie April 20, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Oraganization doesn't have to be ugly. Love how you framed the pegboard. That will pretty much hold whatever you need. Wish I had that room. Green with envy!

Very, VERY pretty organizing! I love the way you achieve awesome organization (you're my idol in this department) with great looks.

And now I'm wondering. . . just what were you using the glue gun for?

I generally dislike pegboard – actually I'm fairly certain there has never been one I've ever even considered a possible – but I love this! Very clever on the glass idea!

I am in the process of relocating my craft room from a small bedroom to an unused living room. I have had a very large frame that I wasn't sure what to do with it. NOW I KNOW! Thank you for the inspiration.

Love it! Hope your better than your mom @ keeping down the number of items I think I have to have on my peg board garden center. It keeps getting bigger and bigger. My theory, is to keep like things together. That's hard to do a stay "Pretty". Your soooo talented.

Awesome, Amanda! Welcome! I hope the idea works out for you!

Wendy July 2, 2012 at 3:54 pm

I think I missed something…What are the wooden slats on the back of the pegboard frame for? Hanging? I would love to duplicate this, and would like to know how you hung it in order to keep it stable. I imagine it is pretty heavy…Thanks!

Chris July 2, 2012 at 6:25 pm

Hi Wendy! Without the wood slats, the pegboard would have sat flush to the wall. That wouldn’t have left any room for the hooks to go in behind it. The slats kept the frame off the wall a bit, so I could easily insert/move around the hooks. As for hanging it, my husband used a couple of mollies (anchors) to secure it into the wall and screwed hooks into the frame to hang on the mollies. They fit right over the screws in the wall. Secure! Hope that helps!

Juju July 20, 2012 at 6:29 pm

Hi Chris,
I LOVE the pegboard, and I’ve done something similar in my own “craft studio”, however it’s driving me crazy trying to figure out how you hung your Fiskars cutter. I have the same one, and I haven’t found a way to hang it like you have!
Help!
Thanks in advance!

Chris July 20, 2012 at 10:00 pm

Ha! I had the same problem, Juju! I actually used a drill and drilled a hole into the middle of it so I could hang it on a hook. I hope that helps! Good luck!

marcy November 23, 2012 at 1:46 am

Just discovered your site. It is great. I love the pegboard project. I have a questions. My husband put up a basic pegboard w/metal hooks in the garage to hold beach stuff and gardening things. But, every time I take something off – lift it up and take off- the hook almost always falls to the ground. ANNOYING!
How do you make your hooks stay on the pegboard when taking items off?
Thanks!
Marcy
