Remember the bathroom re-design? Well, spring break is fast approaching, and I have to have things ready. I plan to paint that week, so I’ve been feverishly looking for things to prettify it.
I don’t know how you ladies find such great furniture at consignment shops. I never have any luck. Well….not never anymore! I went one last time to a store I don’t really like going to, and look who was waiting for me!
JCPenney for $29.99! AND it’s only 18 inches tall. Come on now.
Lil' Woman says
I do first and ask questions later…So I vote, just rip it off! 🙂 …I don’t really know but thats what I would do.
Nancy says
Your might try a hot iron on the table top. I have used this method to remove single tiles, and it worked well.

I would try ripping it off and if the damage was too severe you could have a piece of wood cut to put over it and then finish however you like!
RootsAndWingsCo says
I also think tearing into that thing is your best option. Not sure what to do after that because it will depend on what is left when you’re done with the demo! You could always cover the top with those pretty .14 cent tiles with the nice stamping on them! I’m sure you’ve seen that idea somewhere….
It actually might leave you with a nice lip all around the table. I love when there are built in features to keeping my “stuff” where it belongs!

I love the table. It sure fits nicely in that spot. I have not done much with furniture refinishing, so I am not the person to ask. Hope you get some good ideas. Love & blessings from NC!
Half of the Style Sisters says
Love the table! I have heard of heat (like the iron idea to remove old tiles) I am not sure how it all works but definately remove the kaka tile. Can’t wait to see what you do.
Madeline says
Rip it off, sand it to smooth it out, paint it and then distress it with some light sanding…will look marvelous if you like the shabby chic look. I have done it many times 🙂

Shannon says
I say rip it off! 🙂 If it is too bad you can just cut some wood to fit.
Laurel @ Ducks in a Row says
I don’t know what to do. I have been a fan of Sadie Olive forever. Sarah started my whole house obsession!
Stuffbymichele says
I would suggest you use a heat gun and gently pry it up with a flat scraper. Once you get the tile off, you can use goo-done to get rid of the glue residue. Otherwise you’ll go through a ton of sandpaper. Good luck!
I LOVE your decorating ideas and I can’t wait to see how the bathroom turns out.

Don’t even worry about taking off the marble with this stuff.
Mandi says
Take a deep breath and rip it off just like a bandaid! If it is too bad, you can have that handy hubby of yours put some wood over it. I bet though, that once you sand and paint it, it will look fine. Good luck. You better do some “tutorializing” on this one!
Amy says
My first thought was…Mosiac the top of it!! My Mom makes crosses but she has also done tons of table tops and side tables. Something kind of like this http://karleasart.blogspot.com/2008/08/new-fun-things.html would look good on the top of it! May take a little longer but you’ll be proud of it in the long run!
Jennifer says
I say take that top off! Hopefully the damage will be minor enough that you can sand it out, then paint and distress to make it that weathered look you are going for. Can’t wait to see the results!
Cali Girl says
im not a pro, but i would paint ovet the top. nice find!
Barb says
Chris,
I googled your problem. This is what was suggested and I agree.
“probably the easiest way to remove laminate is to carefully slide a wood chisel between the laminate and the base and pry gently all along the edges, going deeper as you loosen it.
Easiest way to redo a laminate top table is to screw real wood right over the laminate (from beneath!) and cover the edges with molding. “
Love the table!!!!! Love the price even better!!!!That’s my girl, great shopping. Mom
Lorie says
Take the laminate off. It won’t paint well. And if you ding it a bit you can fix it with some wood putty.
You will probably need to remove the adhesive, but you can do that with paint thinner.

Can’t wait to see what your new bathroom looks like.

Modge Podge! I am not kidding about this. I have modge podged all kinds of surfaces-granted not cheap, yucky laminate-but why wouldn’t it work. You could modge podge fabric, or paper or burlap. What have you got to lose? I would be scared that ripping it off would damage the table too much and it is the perfect size and all.
Be daring. Inspire me to do the same. I am in a funk!!!
queenbee says
I think that you should just paint over the entire thing. Great find for only 7.99.

March your pretty self right over to the Magic Brush http://www.themagicbrushinc.blogspot.com/ – email Jennifer and ask her what to do. 🙂
She’s a pro.
Or…take the advice of Girly Stuff http://www.caromalcolours.com/
– cuz that would work beautifully too!
Momofgirls says
Rip it off!! If it gets messed up, you could have a piece of granite cut for the top!!!
Emily says
I just painted a dresser that had a laminate top just like that and
I just spray painted over it. You can check it out on my blog!
Good Luck!
xoxo, Emily
Katrina Chambers says
I also vote to rip it off. Good luck and can’t wait to see it finished!
Sarah says
Fabulous find! That is about the same size I need for our hallway, it is a tricky size and I haven’t found anything that works yet!!! Good luck! I would try ripping it off and painting it and then rubbing to make it look worn if that is the look you are wanting.
I can’t wait to see what you decide!
Amber says
I’m just concerned about how the paint will stick to that awfulness. So I have to suggestions:
1) Rip it off and then go from there.
2) Try spraying some primer on it first before you paint it.
And girl, those pictures are TO.DIE.FOR!!
Go check out the site, Sproost. I did a post about it on Friday. It is an amazing site, and so much fun!
DomesticDivasFancy says
I would rip it off too…I painted over something like this and the paint would always scratch off. I would either rip it off (which I would use an iron) or put another piece of wood over top to finish as you wish.
Amanda@Imperfectly Beautiful says
Ohmagoodness! I have no clue, but please do share what you decide to do with that super icky laminate. Good luck. And no worries. Everything you touch seems to turn to gold, so it will be fabulous!
Sarah @ Thrifty Decor Chick says
If you use high adhesive primer, you can paint it no problem. It depends on how much use it will get too — but with good primer it should paint fine!
Tammy says
Definately take off the top. I would try sanding the whole thing and re-staining it, or you could paint it and crackle finish it.
Jennie says
I say take off the top, sand it down, primer, paint and distress…. great pics of ideas…. I love stuff like that ….
Wendy @ The Shabby Nest says
I’m with just about everybody else…rip that baby off. gently.
the undomesticated wife says
Very cute table! However, I agree, thrift stores have gotten a bit higher in their prices lately!
If it’s just a vinyl top, I’d try taking it off. Use some heat so the adhesive will soften up. It will probably be really gunky and nasty underneath, but just sand it and paint and it will look awesome!
It has a really cute shape!

I have a question for you on the small benches from Pennys. They are just the size I need but when I do a search nothing comes up on the Pennys site. What are some of the descriptive words they use? I love your blog and all your great projects. Your an inspiration. Thanks for your help, Bonnie
Knit Purl Gurl says
I would cover the laminate. Ripping it off will just rip up your table. Maybe do a mosiac tile on top or pottery shard top! That would be so pretty!
BTW – I LOVE your blog! I left you an invitation at my blog:

i have NO IDEA what you should do, but i certainly want to know what you do and how it turns out!

Chris, I wasn’t thinking stool I was set on bench – thanks so mumnal51ch for your help – I went right to them. Now I need to decide on the the color. Thanks, Bonnie

yikes – sorry about the word scramble there… much is the correct spelling

What a great find!
I really like the color on your wall, too. Do you happen to know what color it is?
I am in the middle of a bedroom redesign and have 5 different colored paint samples on my wall right now. What’s one more? ha ha
writing4612 says
Just try pulling off a little first. If that doesn’t work, look for something else to put on top…like leftover tile or granite. No one would ever know the difference.

Stop in your tracks and check out Meg from Whatever (unless you already blog stalk her like I do).
Her bathroom, featured on Apartment Therapy,is very much in line with your inspirations and ideas.
You will love it!
Good Luck with the table!

Thanks for the compliments! 🙂 I love that bench too. My mom actually gave it to me. It’s part of a set of a table and two benches. I have them split up into different rooms though.
I LOVE the JC Penny ones you found though! 🙂

Can you email me with the color of your bathroom? I am looking to repaint our master bath and just love that color. Thanks!

you better get in line, cuz i’m first in line to get in her door.

LOL. I can't help you with that but the ladies here definitely can. I can't wait to see what you did with the table. 😀
